As I was preparing to write about Soul Contracts, I was thinking about a personal example from my own experience that I would like to share with you. I have worked through so much karma in this lifetime, that some parts of those experiences have been already forgotten because they don’t trigger an emotional response in me anymore.
I asked my husband to help me remember some patterns from my past, and a memory came into my mind so strongly that I knew this was the example I wanted to share with you.
About ten or eleven years ago, I was undergoing a series of Rolfing sessions and during the last session, I was laying on the table, on my back, literally crying from pain while my therapist was working through the knots in my calf muscles.
(If you don’t know, Rolfing is a holistic system of bodywork that uses deep manipulation of the body’s soft tissue to realign and balance the body’s myofascial structure, which improves posture, relieves chronic pain, and reduces stress.)
Something dark and nebulous was slowly rising up from the depths of me to the surface, but I was only partially aware of it because of the physical pain. When my therapist pinned my feet to the table with his hands, I got very uncomfortable, to the point of severe nausea. I tried to free my feet, but he held tight and encouraged me to bear the discomfort, guiding me to go deeper with a soothing voice.
Bear the discomfort?! I wanted to jump out of my skin!
I started to writhe and sob, and then I had a flashback into the scene that shook me to the very core!
In another time and place, I saw myself as a young woman tied up to a treeand set aflame by soldiers dressed in red, while some local villagers stood behind them watching. Some of them cried, some just watched in silent shock, but no one, not one of them, came to her aid. She cried for help only to perish in agony in those flames.
During that lifetime, I was an herb healer living at the edge of the forest. I was young, kind, and wise beyond my years, friends with animals, nature spirits, and faeries. Nearby villagers came to me with their ills and I was always there to help them.
At one moment, my present-day consciousness merged with one of the burning young woman, and I saw the villagers through her eyes: “Never again will I use my gifts to help them!” – I heard her cry in pain.
This past-life flashback shed the light on two peculiarities in my life: one – I strongly resisted working with humans after being initiated into shamanism. I was doing the land, water, and air clearings, working with animals and plants, but was refusing to see people.
And second, I couldn’t go into the forest. The thought terrified me as if the forest was hostile and would somehow hurt me. It bothered me immensely because I loved Nature, and my house in Virginia was at the edge of the forest! The shadow of the past life trauma was haunting me – I had been burned in my own element!
This is a very vivid example of a Soul Contract, or in my case, a Vow. Something we say while embodied with great emotional intensity can turn into a Vow, Contract, Promise, or Commitment.
Soul Contracts and Vows can be positive or negative, intentional or unintentional. In my case above, it was a negative, unintentional Vow that was preventing me from fully claiming my intuitive gifts and assisting human beings in their healing, as well as also blocking me from finding joy and peace of being among the trees.
Now, I no longer fear the forests of this world. I’ve been blessed to live very close to them on the East and West Coasts. I love venturing into the woods with my husband and making sacred spaces for us to pray. Obviously, I also love to work with Humans now too, and have been grateful to witness and assist so many healing transformations. My work is a true source of joy for me!
Most of the time, past life Soul Contracts and Vows are negative. We make them in a moment of intense negative emotion (fear, rage, trauma, shock, disappointment, etc.) without really meaning them. For this reason, past life Contracts and Vows tend to cause problems in our current lifetime. They create unhealthy patterns and behaviors that keep us stuck.
One sign of an active negative Soul Contract is when you feel as if something you can’t describe or see is holding you back from happiness you desire. It seems to recur over and over in your life and becomes a source of inner frustration, sadness, or depression.
The good news is you don’t have to continue living them out or suffering through them! In our free-will Universe all of the negative Soul Contracts can be revoked!
